Moto GP Pre-season 2011 starts at Sepang
The Malaysian circuit will host the MotoGP class for the first official three-day Test of the year, which starts on Tuesday.
The sound of 800cc MotoGP engines will roar into action again on Tuesday after the winter period, but whilst there may have been a lack of the type of on-track action which satisfies the hunger of enthusiastic fans plenty of unseen hard work has been going on in the factory workshops of the premier class manufacturers.
Last spotted on their MotoGP bikes at the post-season Test at Valencia in November the 17 riders who will line up on the grid this season will also be eager to see just what has been modified and improved on their machines, having undertaken their own individual training programmes in a bid to be as best prepared as possible for the Sepang outing.
World Champion Jorge Lorenzo will arrive in Malaysia in full fitness as he continues his preparations for the defence of his title on the M1, but for two of the Yamaha Factory Racing man’s prospective rivals in 2011 the Sepang Test could prove anything but comfortable.
Ducati rider Valentino Rossi is still nursing his shoulder which he described as “painful” and “not very strong” following a private ride on a 1198 machine at Misano on Wednesday, and the Italian will focus on his riding position as he attempts to make the best out of the days. Dani Pedrosa is another rider still recovering from injury, but the Repsol Honda rider’s collarbone appears to be at a more advanced stage of healing and he will hope to be more able when pushing himself in this Test.
Team-mate to the Spanish rider Casey Stoner has no such concerns and the Australian was extremely satisfied with his first taste of the RC212V last November in Valencia. Stoner will aim to continue the immediate affinity he showed with the Honda then, as he assesses electronics changes which were amongst some of the aspects underlined for work throughout the winter. The third man in the Repsol Honda garage, Andrea Dovizioso, will likewise be intent on getting a good first run of 2011 under his belt.
Ben Spies continues his integration into the factory Yamaha set-up alongside Lorenzo, whilst fellow Americans Nicky Hayden will be eager to see what the Desmosedici GP11 brings and Colin Edwards the M1 of the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team. HRC supported Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) gets set for a second season in the premier class having impressed last year.
Other riders entering their sophomore year in MotoGP are Héctor Barberá (Aspar Team) and sole Suzuki rider in 2011 Álvaro Bautista, whilst Hiroshi Aoyama does so with his new team San Carlo Honda Gresini. More experienced but with continued adaptations to make to the Desmosedici nevertheless, Pramac pair Loris Capirossi and Randy de Puniet will also approach the Test in a determined manner.
Moto2 World Champion Toni Elías continues his reintegration into the elite category as he and the LCR Honda team work further on the RC212V, whilst two rookies in Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing) and Cal Crutchlow (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) will use the valuable time as diligently as possible. The Brit will be riding for the first time since shoulder surgery in December.(www.motogp.com)

Noriyuki Haga wraps up the last run at Portimao
Few riders ventured out onto the track in the final Superbike session, which was again hit by inclement weather, and it was Noriyuki Haga (PATA Racing Team Aprilia) who ended up on the top of the timesheets.
But the fastest rider over all three days at the Portimao test was Jakub Smrz (Team Effenbert - Liberty Racing). His 1'43.503 on the dry opening day was not beaten through the rest of the sessions, giving his Czech-based Ducati team a great start to life in WSBK racing.
Fastest man on Friday was Ruben Xaus (Castrol Honda), whose lap of 1'47.065 was recorded in a dry window between the rains, which came and went with great frequency, if little force.
In the overall three day rankings, Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) was second, and WSBK rookie Eugene Laverty (Yamaha World Superbike Team) third, with Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team Superbike) a confident fourth.
Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) filled the top five with World Champion Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team) sixth, despite only taking to the track on the dry first day. (www.worldsbk.com)

Ben Spies relaxed and ready for first Sepang Test
Spies relaxed and ready for first Sepang Test
After a relaxed off-season the factory Yamaha rider is more than ready to get back on a motorcycle next week in Malaysia. In an interview with motogp.com he discussed not only the Sepang date but also his team structure for 2011 and his objectives for the new season
After an outstanding debut season in MotoGP in 2010 Ben Spies returns for a second year in the World Championship as a factory Yamaha rider, with expectations surrounding the 26 year-old even greater in 2011.
As the American rider prepares for the first official Test at Sepang next week (February 1st-3rd) motogp.com caught up with him to discuss his aims for the three days in Malaysia, as well as his expectations for the forthcoming season. Firstly though Spies talked about his off-season so far, which has included setting up his own cycling team and with whom he spent last week at a South Texas training camp.
“I have been getting the cycling team going and we had our first race a couple of days ago, it’s been great fun” Spies explained. “I’ve been doing my own training too, and getting ready for the first Test. It’s come round quick and I’m excited about getting back on the bike and starting with the new team. I haven’t ridden a motorcycle since Valencia so it’s going to take me a little while to get back into the rhythm, but now I’m ready to get back into it.”
Continuity will be a key factor for Spies in 2011 and as he steps up to the factory Yamaha team he will carry on working alongside Crew Chief Tom Houseworth and mechanic Gregory Wood, who were both with him in the Tech 3 set-up last year. A notable addition for this year is Massimo ‘Maio’ Meregalli, who will act as Team Manager for Spies’ crew and with whom the American won the 2009 Superbike title.
“I have a great team and everyone around me is the best I feel I could put together, now it’s up to me. I feel like a lot of the pressure is off as we have made the step to the factory team, now I’ll just do the best I can,” said Spies.
“Me and ‘Maio’ talk a lot to one another but we don’t talk much about ambitions. As personalities we have big goals and ambitions and we get along really well, we have done from day one. He just knows how I think and knows that I don’t like to talk a lot about the little things. When I’m in the garage he’s very good at being able to read what I’m thinking and what I need. We have a very good bond. It was a big deal for me coming over to Europe for my first year (in Superbikes in 2009) and he took such good care of me. We obviously won the title together but he was also a really good friend too. We were also able to put that aside and work very well as a team, and he runs a very good programme. He listens to what I need and I can’t wait to work with him again.”
Shifting focus to the upcoming Test, Spies said: “We will obviously have to look at some stuff Yamaha will have for the bike, and for me it’s more about going there to ride, getting the bike moving in the right direction, working as a team, and then going back for the second Test and really treating it very methodically. We always want to go fast and make improvements, but what position we’re in or how fast we go is not the goal. I just need to get comfortable on the bike again and we need to understand how the team works together.”
Team-mate Jorge Lorenzo tested a new M1 engine at Valencia last November, and when asked what more he feels he requires from the bike Spies responded: “We could see last year we needed a little more straight line speed, that was obvious during the season, but the overall M1 package is fantastic. It’s a great balance of a motorcycle that does everything very well, and I think we just need to work on the engine a little bit. Right now I don’t know exactly what will be at the Test, there could be a huge change in the bike and I’m just getting ready to see what will be brought – we’ll see when we get there and then evaluate it.”
Well known for his cautious approach to stating what he expects to achieve ahead of a season, Spies discussed his aims for the 2011 campaign both in terms of results and personal development.
“It’s very simple for me. Every year I want to do better than the year before. In 2010 we finished second, third, fourth and fifth, had a pole position (at Indianapolis) and led the race for a little bit. We didn’t do anything crazy but we were very solid, and we didn’t win a race. I wasn’t expecting that out of myself, I think maybe some other people were,” he commented. “So next year it’s to fight at the front consistently, and to win a race. That is the goal. We finished sixth in the Championship so we want to do better and finish in the top five. You can’t always make huge, huge gains, but if I do better than I did last year there will be a win and we’re going to see the front more often. “
Spies continued: “I also have a great team-mate and I’m ready to try and learn from him as well. Jorge is super fast and has a lot of talent. I’m comfortable with my race craft and things like that, I like how I do things in that area, but I’m not scared to say that I need to learn how to go faster and I think he is a very fast guy. With other things, from how I train to my approach to races, I don’t like to change because that’s what I’m happy with. But I do have to learn how to go faster on a motorcycle.”
Ready and willing to learn from defending World Champion Lorenzo, the ultimate aim will be to challenge his team-mate as a measure of how far Spies has come.
“When the lights go off I want to win the race, as does everybody on the grid. I do want to beat Jorge, he’s the first person you want to beat, but he’s the fastest guy in the world and is an awesome rider. First I need to try and understand why he goes so fast. He is a genuine and talented guy and wants to win. There’s nobody else right now that I’d like to be team-mates with more in terms of learning how to go fast on a motorcycle, and I’m very excited about being team-mates with him for next year,” concluded Spies.(www.motogp.com)

MotoGP HRC Repsol Honda Test Dani Pedorosa
" Sepang will be like a personal test"
http://est-moto.ocnk.net/
http://www.motogp.com
The Repsol Honda rider has spoken to motogp.com about his physical recovery process, this year’s developments in the team, expectations ahead of the next test in Sepang, the new season ... and much more.
Dani Pedrosa has now resumed training after two months of inactivity. It was a forced rest, declared by doctors after visiting the operating room as a result of the double fracture of the left collarbone he suffered in Japan.
How was the return to work and how have you approached the physical preparation in these circumstances?
Until New Years I was resting but since the medical tests, when they gave me the green light, I've been training in Switzerland. I lost the entire month of December while many others were probably already in training. Obviously I can not force myself to the maximum everyday because the body doesn’t allow it, but I am working with my coaches doing the best I can.
What level of recovery are you at now?
Without doubt I am much better, the tests have shown this. They have given me the green light to train the left arm equal to the right although, logically, starting more smoothly. I have improved a lot in these days. It’s a slow process but I’m going in the right direction.
Are you facing this first test in Sepang with excitement? Do you have withdrawal symptoms from the bike?
Yes, there are always withdrawal symptoms from the bike! You really look forward to the first test. I am encouraged, because November and December were tough, there were a lot of problems and I was not well, but as you start to improve and see that the feeling is better, you are automatically encouraged. I know that I will not be at 100% in the first test but if I can control the bike well I will be happy. For me this is like a personal test to see how I am.
In November when you tested the RC212V at the Valencia Test, you said you would like to improve various aspects of the engine, chassis, aggressiveness of the bike… What do you expect to find in Malaysia in two weeks?
Well, basically what I asked for. Speaking with the team, we saw that there were some areas for improvement, we tried some modifications that were positive, I’m sure that they have been working on that and I hope that in Malaysia we will have a couple of options to see if they improve braking and acceleration, traction on corner exit. We will focus on that.
Will Casey Stoner’s arrival to the team change the approach of the work on the evolution of the bike? Will there be a leader in setting the direction to take?
This question is a little more for HRC but, ok, in principle during the pre-season things are tested and when the first race comes I suppose that the things that have been tested and chosen will be given to the riders, all of them.
How do you see it working inside in the Honda box this year?
Well, the same as last year but with one more rider.
What do you think is needed for 2011 to be the year for Dani Pedrosa?
One of the most important things is to try to not get injured. If I can stay on the bike and be on all the starting grids, it will certainly give me more points than if I am not.
Is Jorge Lorenzo the man to beat in 2011 or is the worst enemy in your own box?
For me all the rivals are important, so I value them equally because any of them can surprise you. We know that there are four or five riders that can be there in every race but the Championship is long and you always have to be on top. I have never underestimated anyone, intending that no one can surprise me, but we already know that the good riders will be there fighting at the front every race and you have to keep them close because they are strong riders. But, well, so am I, so we’ll be there fighting!.
Including a Valentino Rossi on the Ducati GP11…
Yes, I think that Rossi will adapt quickly to the bike. He will have to work obviously, but we have already seen in the past that he is very capable. He will definitely be there.
Of all the developments of 2011, with Stoner in your garage, Rossi at Ducati and new faces like Abraham and Crutchlow on the grid, what are you most curious about?
More than the riders -we already know that they are fast and how they will go- I think that one of the most important things of 2011 will be the practice sessions. The new timing of the sessions that we already tested at the end of the year. I think that these will play an important role on Sunday.

Ducati Corse conclude Jerez programme
The factory team completed a three-day Test at the Spanish circuit on Wednesday, as they made some final on-track adjustments to the Desmosedici GP11 before the official MotoGP Test at Sepang on February 1st.
The Ducati Team rounded off a three-day Test at the Jerez circuit in Spain on Wednesday, completing a productive programme of set-up work on the Desmosedici GP11.
Vittoriano Guareschi and Franco Battaini, who were tasked with carrying out the specified work on various areas of the set-up as outlined by Filippo Preziosi, began riding at 11.30am local time on Wednesday morning. Guareschi concluded his day at 4pm having ridden 61 laps, whilst Battaini continued until 6pm after putting in 90 turns of the track.
The Desmosedici will next be on track at the official MotoGP Test at Sepang in Malaysia, which takes place from February 1st-3rd and in which factory riders Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden will have the opportunity to evaluate the bike's progress.
“We were lucky because the weather conditions enabled us to test for all three days,” said Preziosi. “We identified two set-up configurations that Vittoriano determined to be suitable in terms of front-end feel and turn-in. With Franco, we found some interesting solutions for both anti-wheelie control and traction control.”
“We’re all satisfied with the work carried out, even though we’re aware that we’re dealing with technical solutions that were tried on a different track and in different conditions compared to those of Sepang. Only when Valentino and Nicky have had their turn to try and evaluate those solutions will we be able to have a more certain confirmation and to understand if we’ve taken a step forward – and if so, how big a step.”

DUCATI CORSE MOTO GP TEAM FIRST DAY OF TESTING AT JEREZ
A three-day Ducati MotoGP development test began today in Spain, at Jerez de la Frontera. Two teams, under the guidance of Technical Director Filippo Preziosi, supported official test rider Franco Battaini and Vittoriano Guareschi, who temporarily replaced his Team Manager duties with those of a rider.
The test is being carried out to speed up the setup work of the Desmosedici GP11 for the two factory Ducati Marlboro Team riders, Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden, who will take to the track themselves at the Sepang test in the first week of next month (February 1-3).
It was a sunny day, but with high humidity in the morning, as is often the case at the Andalusian circuit, and Guareschi and Battaini were only able to get on the track around midday.
“It was a very productive day,” said Vittoriano Guareschi after completing 50 laps, “even though the track’s grip was really bad, in part because of the high humidity and in part because the F3 test that took place until yesterday left the asphalt quite dirty. As planned, ‘Batta’ (Franco Battaini, 60 laps) and I divided the responsibilities. I worked on the chassis with the goal of improving turn-in, while Franco concentrated on the electronics, including the new anti-wheelie and anti-spin systems that we’re testing and adjusting. I think I found a couple of interesting things with set-up that help with the front-end feel. We worked on ride height, seat position, and on many aspects of bike set-up that will help with all of the data-acquisition work that are necessary to be ready for Malaysia, when Vale and Nicky will ask us to change the bike in various ways. It’s a refinement process that will proceed for the two days in order to speed up the factory riders’ work in Malaysia.”

The Bikes of 2010: WSBK Suzuki GSX-R1000
The bike that nearly beat Biaggi, the 2010 vintage GSX-R1000 was an adept machine, making the best of its characteristics, as the Alstare team ended up doing all their own development and tuning work in-house.
On paper the GSX-R was less of a racebike than it showed on track, as the longer stroke 74.5 x 57.3mm engine was treated to a compression ratio of 14.5 to one, up there with the other big hitters. The motor was fed by Keihin injectors and Magneti Marelli Marvel 4 engine management, which controlled fuel mapping, ignition advance and all rider aids. Data acquisition was by Marelli and 2D. New piston design and cam timing were matched to the factory Arrow exhaust this year. The result, power over 215bhp, came in at just under 14,000 rpm. The stock chassis runs a custom swingarm, designed by the team, which was picked out after the winter test programme.
The approach of Alstare was measured and pragmatic, as the latest Öhlins TR25 forks were not used as no time was available to test them and only then back to back with the older TTX25 (with 135mm stroke) forks. The latest RSP40 rear shock was, however, adopted. The Suzuki guys used Nissin brakes in 2010 - and also Brembos. Haslam swapped to Brembo brakes after Monza.
Surprisingly for a racebike the Suzuki has a longer wheelbase in racing trim than its roadbike cousin, simply because of the longer swingarm and headstock offset settings. The new suspension and weight balance were two main points of focus in 2010, rear swingarm rigidity also.
