2011 Moto GP Stoner consistent as well as fast in Malaysia

The Australian was quickest on all three days at the Sepang Test, and was also the most consistently fast rider on the final day. motogp.com calculated Stoner and the rest of the MotoGP riders’ average lap times from their longest runs on Thursday…

By the end of the Sepang Test only two riders had broken the 2’00” lap barrier at the Malaysian circuit, as Repsol Honda pair Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa set times in the 1’59”s on the Thursday. The pair also occupied the top two positions at the end of each of the three days.
With the Honda performing well across all three days and four RC212Vs at the sharp end of the timesheet on Thursday, motogp.com calculated the average lap time of each of the 17 riders from the longest run they completed on the final day at Sepang to gain an idea of the consistency of lap times from each.
Marco Simoncelli, who finished third on the final-day timesheet, completed the longest run (20 laps) on Thursday, whilst a number of other riders ran considerably lesser totals. As well as being the fastest rider in terms of one-off lap times, Stoner also had the quickest average lap time on the final day from a longest personal stint of 14 laps, with Ben Spies and Pedrosa following.
Valentino Rossi, who was only 11th quickest on Thursday, was fourth fastest in the average lap table, although his time came from a shorter run of six laps.
Below is the complete list of the average lap times from each rider’s longest run, with the lap total of the stint their time was calculated from in brackets.
Casey Stoner, 2’01.286 (14 laps)
Ben Spies, 02’01.472 (5 laps)
Dani Pedrosa, 02’01.683 (10 laps)
Valentino Rossi, 02’01.739 (6 laps)
Jorge Lorenzo, 02’02.000 (19 laps)
Colin Edwards, 02’02.142 (3 laps)
Andrea Dovizioso, 02’02.153 (15 laps)
Loris Capirossi, 02’02.548 (5 laps)
Marco Simoncelli, 02’02.551 (20 laps)
Nicky Hayden, 02’02.600 (9 laps)
Hiroshi Aoyama, 02’02.687 (5 laps)

WSBK 2011 Checa in total control of Phillip Island race 1

Carlos Checa's winning margin over Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) in Phillip Island race 1 was clear evidence of the Althea Racing Ducati man's domination in the opening round of the Superbike World Championship. Checa took the lead from Laverty on lap 3 and steadily pulled out to an unchallenged 4 second lead at the flag. Biaggi soon realized it was not possible to keep the pace of Checa and settled for second.
The podium was completed by Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad) who held off both Yamaha World Superbike Team riders, Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri who exchanged places right at the flag in a sprint finish.

Sixth was Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare), who made a great recovery that saw him finish ahead of Jakub Smrz (Ducati Effenbert - Liberty Racing) and Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing). Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) was running in the top 6 but slipped down to 12th after an off-track excursion, while front row man Sylvain Guintoli (Ducati Effenbert - Liberty Racing) crashed out and will not take part in race 2 after picking up a series of injuries to his right hand, knee and shoulder-blade.   www.worldsbk.com

WSBK 2011 Biaggi 'truly happy' with unexpected PI form

Having played down his chances of success at Phillip Island earlier in the week, Max Biaggi goes on to take second on the grid in Superpole.

Max Biaggi has sent out a warning signal to his World Superbike rivals after almost taking pole position for the 2011 opener at Phillip Island – around a circuit he freely admits doesn't favour the Aprilia RSV-4.

The Italian came to within 0.013secs of displacing Carlos Checa, the weekend's dominant figure thus far, during Superpole after joining his rival in dipping below the previous lap record.

The result comes despite Biaggi's claims that he would likely struggle around the Australian venue as it isn't as well suited to the RSV-4 as other circuits on the calendar.

As such, while his lap of 1min 30.895 wasn't quite able to pull off a surprise, he was nonetheless thrilled with the result.

“Wow! Thirteen thousandths are nothing,” he said. “It means that even on this track, which has never favoured us, we have improved a lot compared to the last two years. I am truly happy with this result which is to the merit of the team's hard work coming here and testing during the off season.

“Those tests allowed us to better understand our problems, so we worked hard on the details, small adjustments which can make the difference. We are not the fastest, but one thing for sure is that for the races we're competitive.

“The weather conditions [for the race] will be important, the temperature and the tyres we choose as a consequence. Then, as always, we'll be ready to give it our all.”

2011 Checa again the ace in the WSBK pack

Results of first qualifying at Phillip Island saw Carlos Checa (Ducati Althea Racing) stake his claim as number 1 favourite for the Superbike wins in the opening round on Sunday. The Spaniard stopped the clocks with a time of 1 minute 31.577 seconds, a tenth quicker than his free practice time of the morning, but slower than his best from recent testing - simply because the warmer track surface delivered less outright grip. Another man on the move was Sylvain Guintoli (Ducati Effenbert - Liberty Racing), the Frenchman doing exceptionally well to come within three-tenths of Checa, despite suffering a fall in the morning session.

Carlos Checa:
"Basically, we worked with the tyres this afternoon, just to make choices for raceday. I felt good today but I think the grip was just a little bit less from the racetrack. We used the 'big' rear tyre and had similar results to the previous ones, so if we do that I prefer to continue with the existing tyres for now. Tomorrow we will just work towards raceday again, do a comparison with the tyres and then do some longer runs on the tyre we expect to use for the race.

An impressive sub-1m32s lap time was set by Eugene Laverty (Yamaha World Superbike Team) and the WSBK rookie had the satisfaction of finishing one place ahead of 2010 world champion Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia). Guintoli's team-mate Jakub Smrz posted fifth best time, and Leon Haslam overcame some early set-up issues to go sixth. He was the top BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider today, as Troy Corser went 11th.

Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare) had a harmless crash towards the end and finished seventh, one place up on impressive new WSBK talent, Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Racing Team). Lascorz, a top runner in WSS until his promotion to Superbike this year, was only just over half a second from Checa. Castrol Honda rider Jonathan Rea, who is still battered and bruised from his big testing get offs, was ninth fastest, placing all the competing manufacturers in WSBK this season in the top nine places in the first qualifying session.

Yoshimura Suzuki rider Josh Waters, a wildcard at this event, was an impressive tenth on the exquisitely prepared GSX-R machine, leading his fellow countryman Corser, while Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team) was 12th, and one of many top names who ended up in the gravel at one point or other today.

Tom Sykes, Noriyuki Haga, James Toseland and Leon Camier rounded out the top 16.

World Supersport

Quickest time in the first Supersport qualifying session was recorded by former champion Fabien Foret (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), as he continues his run of impressive form. The Fast Frenchman had to work for it however as he crashed at the start and then only came out for five flying laps, edging the young Spanish rider David Salom (Kawasaki Motocard.com) off the top in the last few seconds. Salom has an official bike at his disposal for the first time in his career and has been making immediate good use of it.

Another up-and-coming youngster, 20 year-old Sam Lowes (Parkalgar Honda) went third quickest ahead of fellow Brit Chaz Davies who is now getting to grips with his Yamaha ParkinGO machine after some trying times in testing recently. Good news also for the other Yamaha team on the grid, Bike Service, with Roberto Tamburini getting the better of Luca Scassa (Yamaha ParkinGO) by a whisker. James Ellison (Bogdanka PTR Honda) continued his recovery with the ninth fastest time, a remarkable feat for a rider who underwent keyhole surgery on his left knee, on Wednesday.

This weekend, WSBK 2011 begin

The 24th edition of the FIM Superbike World Championship is set to get under way this weekend with the opening round held at Phillip Island (Australia). The spectacular sea backdrop venue located 150 kms south of Melbourne in the State of Victoria was the scene for two days of official tests earlier this week, and the times recorded clearly gave some indication of how the 23 riders present will go this weekend. Following the tests, most of the Superbike and Supersport riders were able to relax for a couple of days but on the day before action gets underway, they lined up for the championship's official photo shoot on Gardner Straight.

Carlos Checa: "Testing was very positive, we had a good lap time but what is more important is after Sunday. So far we focus on the work to get the right feeling with the bike because we didn't do so much testing this winter. Finally you arrive at a certain point where the bike is OK, the feelings, the reference and you put the right tyre in and do the lap time. My feeling is that this is one of the best tracks for Ducati. Now we start with a different bike and I think we have a better package than last year."

Jonathan Rea: "I've spent the last two days in hospital, which really frustrated me. I have a bit of swelling in my left hand, but hopefully we can get it down. Movement is perfect and my strength also. I'm looking forward to riding here, my bike's working well. Last year it wasn't perfect but the set-up over a race distance was good and I'm looking forward to banging bars and try and start the season off better than last year."

Max Biaggi: "I feel very good of course to start in the best way possible. I feel good with the bike and the team, we have all the same equipment and the bike gets a little better, but there's going to be a big question-mark for this weekend. I'll try to be there. This track looks like it doesn't suit the Aprilia like the other tracks but we will try to get a good result and the best points possible. Testing was OK and I'm quite optimistic to get a good result on Sunday."

Marco Melandri: "I'm pretty happy to be here, everything looks very new and very difficult. It's going to be very tough for me because of my shoulder, that has taken two months to recover. Testing on Monday and Tuesday was good, so much better than at Portimao but still not 100%. I just want to try and do my best, my Yamaha is working very good and I'm very confident. My physical condition is not perfect right now, so two times 22 laps is not going to be easy!"

Moto GP 2011 Aoyama sets sights on factory riders

"My target is to be in the top five. I know it's not so easy, but we will see how much we can beat the factory riders" - Hiroshi Aoyama.
Hiroshi Aoyama has his sights set on beating as many factory MotoGP riders as possible during his second year in the premier-class.

The former 250cc world champion took a best race finish of seventh during an injury-interrupted rookie season for the now defunct Interwetten Honda squad.

A move to Gresini Honda kept Japan's only MotoGP rider on the grid for 2011 and he began the year well by being classified 7th-6th-7th during the first three-day Sepang MotoGP test earlier this month.

Aoyama's team-mate Marco Simoncelli was fastest at that test but, unlike Aoyama, the Italian has the benefit of a factory-spec RC212V.

“My [satellite] bike is based on last year's bike,” Aoyama told Crash.net. “We received a new engine and I can feel more power and better character.

“I think we will stay with 2010 suspension. I don't hear any news that we will change, but maybe there is a possibility when we receive the new chassis.

“It's going well. Of course I want more, but at this moment I am just adapting to the new team and chief mechanic. So I think where we are is not too bad. I'd be happy to race with this bike.

“Now we want to try to further improve a little bit the braking stability and handling. We tried different rear shocks and this was positive for me. It was very interesting. I never tried something like that and I am very interested to try it again.”

Simoncelli aside, there will officially be eight factory riders in MotoGP 2011 and Aoyama hopes to be regularly beating at least one of them.

“This year we have eight factory riders on the grid so if I can fight with them and beat at least one of them I am happy,” he said. “My target is to be in the top five. I know it's not so easy, but we will see how much we can beat the factory riders.”

Aoyama missed six races last season after fracturing his back at Silverstone.

“This winter I tried to do some exercise that doesn't stress my back too much,” he said. “Swimming, cycling and so on. At the moment I feel physically good. I feel fine.”

The second Sepang MotoGP test starts today (Tuesday).

2011 WSBK : Aprilia Alitalia Team

The Aprilia Alitalia team enters the 2011 season with the world championship victory celebrations from 2010 a happy memory in the collective consciousness of the whole team. An awesome force in racing, the Aprilia Racing operated squad, with the backing of parent company Piaggio, is set to be a force once again, with current champion Max Biaggi the rider to beat for all his would-be rivals.

Now almost 40 years old, Biaggi is still as hungry for success as he ever was, and his decision to continue racing means only one thing - aiming for the top again.

In Leon Camier the team has a rider still developing as a WSBK competitor, but one who has a huge talent and a burning desire to take his first win in this class, and then go for the championship itself.

The Aprilia RSV4 race machine is a hardcore symbiosis of road and track attributes and despite rule changes that have altered its 2010 specification for the new season; the vee-four machine is expected to be as potent in real race situations as ever. Luigi Dall'Igna once again heads the overall project, with the team management duties again taken on by Francesco Guidotti.

2011 WSBK Total control Checa in Phillip Island testing

Carlos Checa (Ducati Althea Racing) was quickest overall at the end of the four SBK official test sessions held at the Phillip Island circuit. On his Ducati 1098R the Spaniard, who won one of the races here in Australia last year, put a gap of over half-a-second between himself and second-placed man Sylvain Guintoli (Ducati Effenbert - Liberty Racing).
Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda), who crashed in the early stages of the last session, was taken by helicopter to hospital for an X-ray on his left wrist and on the ring finger of his left hand.

Fourth quickest overall was Jakub Smrz (Ducati Effenbert - Liberty Racing), followed by Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki) and by Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia), whose best time of the two days came in the final session.

Several crashes marked the final stages of the two-and-a-half hour session. Michel Fabrizio, Marco Melandri and Lascorz all went down and were taken to the Medical Centre for checks.

2011 WSBK final shakedown at Phillip Island

The Phillip Island circuit south of Melbourne, Australia will be the scene on Monday and Tuesday for the final session of pre-season testing in view of the opening round of the FIM Superbike and Supersport World Championships, taking place here next weekend. World Superbike has been coming to the Victoria State circuit every year bar one since 1990, making it the longest-running event in the calendar at a single circuit. In addition to being the venue for the final Infront Motor Sports collective test session, Phillip Island has also been used for testing over the winter by several of the championship's top teams: Aprilia Alitalia and Yamaha at the start of December, and most recently BMW Motorrad and Castrol Honda last week.

Following his 2010 title victory, all eyes will clearly be on the world champion Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia), who went some way towards resolving the problems that his RSV4 Factory had encountered during last year's opening round, where the Italian could only finish fifth and eighth. Following December testing Biaggi should now be quick straight out of the box. Britain's Leon Camier lines up for his second full year with the team and will be looking to produce the results.

Leon Haslam, Biaggi's main rival last year, has now changed team and manufacturer and during the recent tests he was able to put his new BMW S 1000RR through its paces. The German team has been busy throughout the winter and next week it will be possible to gauge exactly how competitive the bike has become. Last year Haslam won one of the Australian races and with his team-mate, seven-times Phillip Island winner Troy Corser, alongside him, the German team will be looking to bring home the results in their third season of WSBK.

The other 2010 race was won by Carlos Checa (Ducati Althea Racing), who now spearheads Ducati's attack in a championship where it is no longer officially present. But the Spaniard will enjoy all the technical and engineering support possible from Borgo Panigale. Checa was right on the pace in Portimao and Aragon testing, while Jakub Smrz on the factory-assisted Effenbert-Liberty Racing Ducati was quickest in Portugal. The Czech Republic rider will be flanked by Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli.

The Big 4 Japanese manufacturers will again be at the forefront, with their various levels of factory involvement. At the moment the leading candidate is Jonathan Rea, who together with Ruben Xaus, brings the legendary Castrol Honda red, white and green colours back to life on the Ten Kate-run CBR 1000RR. All change this year for Yamaha, who after a world title for Ben Spies in 2009 and a transitino year in 2010, line up for the new season with Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty. The Italian is anxious to return to the victory podium in a totally new category for him, while his Irish team-mate has already shown he is one of the best young stars in the category.

A real surprise could come from Kawasaki, another manufacturer to have been very active over the winter, during which it carried out a series of tests on several different circuits. Tom Sykes, Joan Lascorz and Chris Vermeulen (still recovering from last year's injuries) have all looked convincing and the team has carried out a lot of development work on the new ZX-10R, turning it into a competitive machine.

For its part Suzuki Alstare are campaigning with only one GSX-R1000 machine for one rider, Michel Fabrizio who this year has switched from the factory Ducati squad to Francis Batta's Belgian outfit. The Italian has trained hard over the winter and is pushing the undoubtedly competitive Japanese four-cylinder machine to its limits.

A further boost for BMW's hopes for glory could come from the satellite BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team which, after winning the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup with Badovini, will line up on the grid for its Superbike debut with the Italian and the two-times world champion James Toseland.

Mark Aitchison also makes his debut in the category with the Kawasaki Pedercini Team, while the grid at Phillip Island will be filled out by wild-cards, both Australians and both domestic champions, Bryan Staring (Kawasaki Pedercini) and Joshua Waters (Suzuki Yoshimura).

2011 WSS contenders on show in Australia

Phillip Island testing will also see an appearance by the Supersport contenders, whose only overseas round this year is in Australia. Judging by the results of winter testing, they are on course to offer one of the most interesting and competitive championships in recent years. The main focus of interest in the category for 600 cc Supersport machines comes with the return of Yamaha, following an agreement between the European wing of the company and the ParkinGO team to race the 2009 title-winning R6 machines, suitably updated.
In the hands of Luca Scassa and Chaz Davies, the Yamahas will have some tough competition from a plethora of Honda CBR600RRs, which have won the lion's share of the titles over the years. Men to watch on the Hondas will include the Hannspree Ten Kate entrants, former champion Fabien Foret and youngster Florian Marino (photo), both from France, as well as Sam Lowes (Parkalgar), Gino Rea (Step Racing) and James Ellison (Bogdanka PTR).

Kawasaki also have their sights on victory through the Provec Motocard.com team, which will enter Aussie Broc Parkes and young Spaniard David Salom. In winter testing the ZX-6R were right on the pace of the frontrunners. Last in the list of manufacturers present in Supersport is Triumph with its Daytona 675, two examples of which will be raced by South African Ronan Quarmby and Italian Danilo Dell'Omo of the Suriano Racing Team from Italy.

While the arrival of riders from as far afield as Slovenia, Ukraine, Russia, Hungary and Poland helps to give the championship an even more international appeal.

2011 Moto GP Second pre-season chapter to unfold at Sepang

he Malaysian circuit will host the second of the three pre-season Tests of 2011 next week, as the start of the season moves ever closer.

Just under three weeks after its previous appointment at the Sepang International Circuit the MotoGP class returns to the site of the penultimate round of the 2011 World Championship, as the 17 riders that will make up the grid for the forthcoming campaign continue their pre-season preparations in Malaysia.
The Test commences on Tuesday and those present will once again tackle the heat and humidity that are so strongly associated with the circuit, just one of the many challenges to be faced across the three days by defending World Champion Jorge Lorenzo and his growing number of title rivals.
There will be plenty of points of interest at this midway point of the pre-season Testing schedule, but one which was perhaps not envisaged prior to the opening Test was that Marco Simoncelli would arrive at the second meeting as the man to beat. The Italian, entering his second season in the premier class in 2011, was outstanding in setting the best time of 2’00.757 last time out, leading a group of Honda machines (his San Carlo Gresini RC212V was one of five inside the top seven on the timesheet) and getting within 0.239s of Valentino Rossi’s 2009 circuit lap record.
Consolidating the RC212V’s early-season form were Repsol Honda duo Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner, the former dispelling any doubts that his collarbone surgery towards the end of 2010 would hamper his pre-season whilst Stoner’s adaptation to the Honda continued to go from strength to strength in his second ride of it. The pair will of course aim for improvements of the same manner once more in Malaysia, as will their Italian colleague Andrea Dovizioso and Simoncelli’s team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama.
Lorenzo, who was just 0.088s off Simoncelli’s pace, will aim to reel in his rivals as he works hard to set his M1 further on the way to optimum level, and alongside Yamaha Factory Racing team-mate Ben Spies will be hard at work to ensure the prototype makes significant further advances. Both will also be attendees at the official presentation of the team’s 2011 livery on Monday.
Sepang “Two” will also provide Rossi with a vital next examination of his recovering shoulder, as well as his progress on the Desmosedici GP11. The Ducati Team rider was outside the top ten at the start of the month, fractionally over a second off the top time, but there were no signs of panic and the Italian will maintain his steady adjustment to the bike in a bid to be as best prepared as possible and with another Test in Qatar still to go.
Rossi’s team-mate Nicky Hayden was the best performing Ducati just over a fortnight ago, and the American’s determination to push on will surely see him take another step forward with the GP11. Mapfre Aspar’s Héctor Barberá, Pramac pair Loris Capirossi and Randy de Puniet, and rookie Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing) will all also hope to see significant benefits from the three days of hard work on their respective Ducatis.
Álvaro Bautista will carry on with his task of bringing along the GSV-R for his Rizla Suzuki team, and rookie Cal Crutchlow and Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Colin Edwards will pick up where they each left off as the Brit continues his familiarisation with MotoGP machinery. Moto2 World Champion Toni Elías will also be more than eager to see his return to the premier class pick up pace on the LCR Honda.

WSBK Yamaha R1 pulls wraps off 2011

Yamaha formally presents Eugene Laverty, Marco Melandri and the R1 it will campaign in the 2011 World Superbike Championship.

Yamaha has officially unveiled the bike it hopes will take back the World Superbike Championship crown in 2011.

With just over a week to go before the start of the new season, Yamaha revealed its colours for 2011 with the most notable change being the lack of a title sponsor, previous backers Sterilgarda having decided not to stay on for this year.

Reverting to a recognisable corporate blue, white and black colour scheme, the look is expected to be similar to that of its World Supersport and MotoGP efforts as well.

Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty have been charged with challenging for the WSBK title, less than two years after Ben Spies secured the manufacturer's first crown in 2009. The team will also have a new manager in Andrea Dosoli.

The 'finished' R1 will be on track for the second and final WSBK pre-season test at Phillip Island next week, before the season gets underway at the same circuit on 25th February.

Moto GP Aoyama wants to deliver on “top five potential

The Japanese rider explained to motogp.com how he is enjoying his pre-season preparations after a productive first Test in Malaysia at the start of the month, and also spoke about his aims for the 2011 campaign.

Hiroshi Aoyama’s pre-season preparations got off to a highly encouraging start in Malaysia at the start of the month, where the Japanese rider clocked the seventh fastest lap of the first official MotoGP Test of the year.
The 29 year-old, who missed six races last year after fracturing a vertebra at Silverstone, has been working hard on his physical fitness in a bid to be in top shape for the 2011 campaign, and is also integrating well with the San Carlo Honda Gresini team.
“During the winter I was in Japan spending time with family and friends, then in December I came back to Europe and started to do some training which specifically takes into account the back injury I had last year,” Aoyama told motogp.com. “I started carefully and slowly, and I think my condition now is quite good.”
The Sepang Test provided not only a good measure of his physical condition, but was also another step in his development within his new team. “At the first Test in Sepang it was physically okay, across all three days, and we did almost 190 laps which is a lot. Every day I completed the highest number of laps, and that was great as it was my first time on the bike after two and a half months.”
He continued: “The team is working very well together and I was not expecting so much from the first Test because it’s not so easy to change teams, but it went better than I expected and I was happy with the result. The team has a lot of experience and they can help me a lot. This is my second year in MotoGP, and after I missed so many races last year this season is still a learning process for me. They can teach me a lot and I have a lot of respect for them. The feeling with the team is very good and everybody is professional and working hard.”
The on-track work will continue in little over one week’s time when the MotoGP class returns to Malaysia for the second Test of the year. “We want to analyse what we found in Sepang last time out and also try some things with suspension set-up, find better handling, grip, things like that,” said Aoyama.
“When we tested in Malaysia a couple of weeks ago the chassis was the 2010 version and the engine 2011, and I hope I will receive the new bike as soon as possible. Until I get that material I will just be trying to get back my feeling on the bike, and also continue establishing a good communication with the team. This is my goal.”
Looking ahead to the start of the season and his aims for what will hopefully be a more luck-laden second year in MotoGP, Aoyama outlined his targets for 2011.
“I always want to win the race, but we all know that’s not so easy in MotoGP!” he said. “I believe we have the potential to be in the top five, and I want to be there regularly. I want to fight for the top five at every race, and if I can be there it will be very good for us with what we have. I will try to do my best as always, and we have two Tests to prepare for the first race in Qatar.”

The reigning 125cc World Champion and his British rival shared first position on the timesheet on the final day of the Test on Saturday.

Marc Márquez and Scott Redding were in fine form on the third and final day of the Moto2 Test at Valencia on Saturday, as both riders clocked a best unofficially timed lap of 1'35.6 to share top spot on the timesheet. Capirossi and De Puniet attend Pramac presentation

The two riders were present at the MotoGP team’s official 2011 unveiling in Genoa on Wednesday, which was also attended by Team Principal Paolo Campinoti and Ducati Corse CEO Claudio Domenicali.

Pramac Racing Team Principal Paolo Campinoti was accompanied by 2011 riders Loris Capirossi and Randy de Puniet in Genoa on Wednesday for the MotoGP outfit’s official presentation of its Ducati Desmosedici GP11.

The event, which took place on board the MSC Fantasia, was also attended by Ducati Corse CEO Claudio Domenicali, and a press conference followed a presentation of the Pramac liveried GP11.

Paolo Campinoti, Pramac Racing Team Principal:

“MotoGP means adrenaline, passion and fun for Pramac. For 10 years we have been a part of this and we want to continue for many more. We are still a young team and we believe we can get better year by year, both in terms of our results and our services to our partners. This season we have acquired two riders of the highest level in Loris Capirossi and Randy de Puniet. We are convinced that with their talent we will have plenty of opportunities to celebrate our 10th year in MotoGP in the best possible manner. We know it’ll be difficult to fight with the official teams, and our minimum objective is to finish this season as the best satellite team. Next year will be a new adventure with the introduction of the 1000cc engines. If this change helps to produce races of the type seen last year with the new Moto2 class, it will be great fun for everyone!”

Claudio Domenicali, Ducati Corse CEO:

“The relationship with Pramac Racing has been fantastic since its early years. We are happy with Paolo Campinoti and his team, and intend to continue with this project for many years. Pramac Racing is effectively a satellite team, but given the relationship we’ve had over the years we will look to offer more and more support. Pramac Racing is and will be a reference for us. Some of our best engineers work in their team structure and will continue to do so in the future. The return to 1000cc engines in 2012 will be a great adventure, and as always we will put the maximum effort into making our Ducatis, including those of the Pramac Racing Team, amongst the best.”

Loris Capirossi, Pramac Racing:

“I spent five seasons with Ducati and to return now after three years away is like coming back to a big family. For me, to ride with Pramac Racing is putting myself back in contention for good results. I didn’t think for a moment when it was suggested to ride on a Ducati again. In a matter of days we’ll be back on track at the second Test at Sepang. We have to improve some aspects, for example we encountered a few difficulties in braking and in the long turns, but the fact we improved our times shows we’re on the right path. Additionally, with Randy in the team everything will be easier. We have a good understanding between us and he’s the ideal team-mate for this new adventure with Ducati. My story in MotoGP is not finished yet, I think I still have much to contribute in this category, regardless of the new regulations.”

Randy de Puniet, Pramac Racing:

“I’m very happy to be part of this new adventure with Ducati. I’m having fun with this bike, even though it can be a little difficult to control sometimes, in the turns especially. Last year, despite my broken leg, I achieved good results. Now the most important thing for me is that the leg hasn’t been giving me any problems during this first Test and I was able to ride at my maximum. Without doubt the aim is to do well again this season. With hard work from me and my technical crew, I’m sure this goal is easily achievable. In a few days we’ll have another Test and I’m convinced we will improve our results.”

Fabrizio feels back 'at home' with Suzuki SBK

This year the one-man Suzuki Alstare team has opted to hedge all of its bets with Italian rider Michel Fabrizio. The former factory Ducati man is 26 years of age and made his Superbike debut in 2006. He has four wins to his name and has been on the podium 32 times. Fabrizio has already raced with the Belgian Alstare team in 2003 when he won the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup.
"For this reason it's a bit like coming back home," he said. "Team owner Francis Batta gave me a great opportunity in 2003 and I hope that 2011 will also represent another turning-point in my career".

The last three years in Ducati can't have been easy. What are your hopes now you're back on a Suzuki?

"Suzuki have reduced the budget a bit for the Superbike development but the GSX-R is very competitive and last year it was the only bike that managed to keep up with the Aprilia. The team will continue under its own resources: for example, in the tests we had a different engine to the one used by Haslam in 2010 and a further step is expected for the summer races."

How does it feel to be back on a four-cylinder bike?

"It was a bit difficult to get acclimatized to it again after three seasons on a Ducati twin. But now I'm used to a four again."

Are you pleased with the winter testing results?

"We have not done much testing in the dry but we've still got another two days at Phillip Island to complete the workload and set-up. It'll be important to arrive at the first race ready to go."

What are your expectations?

"It'll be important to begin the world championship on the right foot. I always seem to go well in Australia and so does the Suzuki. I hope to be the surprise..."

Márquez returns to work at Catalunya Test 2011

The Spaniard started the 2011 pre-season with a positive feeling on his Suter machine, and with the aim of adapting himself to his new Moto2 bike after the winter break.

After two long months in which the rules ban any testing for the World Championship bikes, Marc Márquez donned his leathers again on Monday to start the process of adapting to Moto2. The Repsol rider made the most of the sunny day at the Catalunya Circuit to recover the feel for his bike, which he had not ridden since last November.
The current 125cc World Champion finished the day with 54 laps, following a plan devised by his team to familiarise himself with the intermediate class. The Repsol rider took the track some minutes after noon, when the asphalt had reached a suitable temperature - 24ºC- and was able to run safely on a day on which temperatures did not drop below 17ºC.
Márquez finished the first day satisfied with his performance on a track where he will have another session on Tuesday. Then the team will then travel to Valencia for the next Test, which is scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Marc Márquez:
“On the first day back it always takes a bit of time to set a good pace again after such a long time off, and you don’t feel completely comfortable, but thanks to the team’s help we were able to improve step by step. When I began to lap a bit faster we also started to make some small adjustments to the bike’s set-up, but they are still not very significant. Now we have to take things calmly; we will have time to try and set good laps. This first Test was for me to recover the confidence on the bike, run the first kilometres of the year and get the first feelings from the machine. As I increased the pace, we found some set-up problems that we have been solving, but we still have a good margin for improvement.”
